Gain from Labour in Newcastle

Result just through from Newcastle Fenham byelection. A Lib Dem gain from Labour by a slender 24 votes, or there abouts. But the BNP were only about 200 behind. Tight result but a gain nonetheless. Well done to Newcastle who now have their 50th councillor. Newcastle before the elections were the biggest Lib Dem group in the country and are now the even biggest group.

Labour's glittering new and otherwise useless group leader in Newcastle, Nick Forbes, must be feeling the heat. Time for Labour there to get their 4th leader in 4 years!

LD majority cut from 300 to 24 compared to May 2008

Anonymous(real name - Scarey Cat) appears to be conveniently forgetting that Labour were defending this seat from the 2007 election.

Labour majority of 4 to a Lib Dem majority of 24

The result is on Newcastle Council's website in record time!

Well done to Labour and Lib Dems for holding your nerves and campaigning tirelessly to keep others at bay - you have even more work to do now and in the future!!

What does the result say and mean for the Tories though? A very poor result indeed and in a ward Jonathan states they held until the mid 1980's. They are clearly kidding themselves as well as everyone else when they say they're serious about making a comeback in the area.

It is perfectly clear that the electorate only have two CLEAR CUT choices - Labour or Liberal Democrats.

Nice try Nigel.

But you are obviously still learning at your master's knee.

Yes, the Tory party is finished in this ward (and in many others) but national polls say the Lib Dems are lagging behind the main two parties under their lacklustre new(ish) leader, Nick Clegg.

The Euro election in June will be an interesting test for the Lib Dems nationally.

Meanwhile, the 'others' (the Lib Dems seem to like that phrase, but I doubt you will use it again on your election literature very soon) are snapping at your heels and I understand your agent in Fenham had a crisis of confidence early yesterday which lasted well into the night.

Nice to see some Labour/Lib Dem solidarity against the 'others' as well and then you still have the cheek to talk about 'CLEAR CUT choices'!

How strange.

Ooh! Kevin! That comes over as a rather bitter to Mr Rutherford.

I just wish we could have a general election and get rid of this lot we have in government at present.

On the subject of the Lib Dems, I think they would be flying alot higher in the polls if they had Vince Cable as their leader.

Not bitter at all Andrea, just some straight talking that's all.

As for voting Lib Dem to get rid of Labour: think again, particularly if this idea floated in the latest New Statesman gets off the ground.

May2008: Lib-Dem 1491, Lab 1188, BNP 295, Con 290

Jan2009: Lib-Dem 1049, Lab 1025 BNP 836, Con 186

As hard as I study the above results, I just cannot, for the life of me, work out where
442 Lib-Dem votes went?

Can someone help me? (I'm but a simple knuckledragger).

I am quite a floating voter Kevin.
1983 + 87 = SDP
1992 = CON
1997 = LABOUR (I ADMIT)
2001 + 05 = LD
Next time it could be very interesting here in Newcastle North

BNP 836

That is VERY worrying and is worrying many around the UK.

Yes, particularly Lib-Lab-Con!

You are right Mr. Scott .I did have a crisis of confidence, but fear is a great motivator and it enabled us to what was needed.

Don't worry Mr Keating, there are a few interesting wards in Newcastle that are just like Fenham in terms of potential support for the BNP.

You might not be so lucky next time!

And the PNB, sorry, the BNP may not do as well next time.
