43 years ago today (23rd November) Dr Who begins

On this day 43 years ago was the first broadcast of Dr Who. It was repeated the following week though I'm not sure whether that was due to the disruption caused by the Kennedy assassination the day before or simply because it was so popular.

It seems to me that there are a huge number of Dr Who fans in the Lib Dems. Is this something to do with the outlook of Lib Dems, breaking out of the straitjacket of conformity to appreciate adventures of a good guy taking on evil, overly powerful, intolerant figures who are attempting to dominate others?......Or is it we just love a good yarn!?

It was a combination of JFK's assassination overshadowing it and a power failure in parts of the country. Its popularity only mushroomed a few weeks later with the first Dalek story.

There may be something in the Doctor as an interventionist, standing up for human rights against fascist regimes and alien monsters. Alex Wilcock has written an article on the subject, one version of which is here.

I have yet to decide which episodes to watch in celebration...

I get the funny feeling that you are as sad as me - and read the Wikipedia date entries each day..

Surely the only way to celebrate is an annual viewing of the original pilot episode!
